Location
The Inner Hebridean isle of Mull has been voted one of the most
desirable places to live in the UK, with its dramatic and diverse
scenery of mountains, lochs, and sandy beaches. It is one of the best
places in Europe to enjoy sightings of the rare white-tailed sea
eagles and magnificent golden eagles. It is also fairly accessible
from the mainland, with a 45 minute vehicular ferry crossing from Oban
to Craignure and two other smaller ferry crossings further north.
Superbly situated in a glorious unspoilt location near the southern
tip of the island and within short walking distance of the beautiful
white sands of Ardalanish Bay - one of Mull's best kept secrets -
Braigh provides a rare opportunity to acquire a traditional
stone-built cottage of considerable character and charm, thought to
date back to circa 1560. It enjoys far-reaching and uninterrupted
views with the dramatic cliffs of Gribun to the east and the
distinctive silhouettes of the Paps of Jura to the south, and is only
a few miles from the rugged grandeur of Carsaig with its soaring
cliffs and coastal paths. The surrounding scenery is wild and rugged
with open moorland and granite outcrops, and will appeal to anyone who
values their privacy and is seeking a rural/coastal retreat off the
beaten track. The nearest village of Bunessan is one mile distant and
offers a range of amenities comprising a well-stocked general
store/Post Office, the local pub The Argyll Arms, a Doctor's surgery,
primary school, church, visitor's centre, and is well-served by mobile
banks and a mobile library. The ferry point for Iona at Fionnphort is
some 8 miles distant.
General Description
Situated on the edge of a deserted township, Braigh was the last
remaining thatched cottage on the Ross of Mull and is a site of unique
historical and archaeological interest. The well-preserved ruins date
from the 18th century, and it is suspected that there were much
earlier mediaeval settlements here (the older and earlier ruins such
as Braigh have rounded corners, while the later ones have square
corners) Approached via an unmarked track, this property affords an
unusual degree of seclusion with no other habitations in the vicinity.
The area is a magnet for birdwatchers with buzzards, hen harriers,
curlews, sea eagles, sparrowhawks, short-eared owls, lapwings,
wagtails, and many other species too numerous to mention here.
Wildlife abound with red deer and hares frequently seen close to the
property, the only "neighbours" being the four-legged variety: grazing
sheep and cattle. The surrounding land is under a rural stewardship scheme and fully protected from further development, which means this idyllic setting can be enjoyed for years to come. Sympathetically and beautifully restored from a
derelict state the formerly thatched slate-roofed cottage retains its
original charm with timber-framed sash windows and deep recessed
window sills. The accommodation is single storey, but deceptively
spacious with generously proportioned rooms: the main living areas
have been left open to the roof with exposed timbers and beams.
